Mark Blumenthal est un médecin américain né le 11 juillet 1831 à Altenstadt, en Bavière, émigré aux États-Unis avec ses parents en août 1839. Diplômé de médecine de l'université Columbia en 1852, il exerce à l'hôpital de Blackwell's Island puis comme médecin résident du Mount Sinai Hospital de 1855 à 1859, avant de présider de 1862 à 1894 l'Institution pour l'instruction perfectionnée des sourds-muets, qu'il dote d'une méthode de lecture labiale alors inédite aux États-Unis; chirurgien-major pendant la guerre de Sécession, il préside aussi la Jewish Chautauqua en 1901-02.
