Leopold Blumenberg est un soldat américain né dans la province de Brandebourg, en Prusse, le 28 septembre 1827, et mort à Baltimore le 12 août 1876, vingt et unième d'une famille de vingt-deux enfants. Après avoir servi dans l'armée prussienne pendant la guerre du Danemark de 1848, il émigre en 1854 à Baltimore; à l'attaque de Fort Sumter, il organise le cinquième régiment d'infanterie du Maryland, qu'il commande comme colonel à Antietam, où il est grièvement blessé; nommé prévôt militaire du troisième district du Maryland de 1863 à 1865, il reçoit ensuite le grade honorifique de général de brigade des volontaires.
