Maurice Bloomfield est professeur de sanskrit et de philologie comparée à l'université Johns Hopkins de Baltimore, né à Bielitz, en Silésie autrichienne, le 23 février 1855, émigré en Amérique en 1867. Formé à Chicago, à Yale, à Berlin et à Leipzig, il obtient son doctorat de Johns Hopkins en 1879 et un doctorat honorifique de Princeton en 1896; considéré comme la principale autorité vivante sur l'Atharva-Véda, il publie notamment le « Kauçika-Sutra » (New Haven, 1890) et une édition photographique de la recension Paippalada de l'Atharva-Véda en trois volumes (Baltimore, 1901).
