Émile Bloch est un otologiste allemand né à Emmendingen, en Bade, le 11 décembre 1847, diplômé de médecine à Fribourg-en-Brisgau en 1871 après des études à Heidelberg, Wurtzbourg et Vienne. Installé comme médecin à Fribourg, il se spécialise en 1886 dans la laryngologie et la rhinologie auprès de Hack puis dans l'otologie auprès de Thiry, dont il devient l'assistant puis, à sa mort en 1892, le successeur comme médecin-chef et privat-docent; nommé professeur assistant d'otologie en 1894, il voit la clinique de cette spécialité ouvrir en 1899 sous sa direction.
