Gerson von Bleichröder est un banquier allemand né le 22 décembre 1822 et mort à Berlin le 19 février 1893. Entré à seize ans dans la banque fondée par son père, il en prend la direction à la mort de celui-ci, en 1855, et en fait une maison de réputation mondiale, jouissant de la pleine confiance du prince Bismarck; conseiller financier à Versailles lors de la guerre franco-prussienne, il reçoit la croix de fer pour ses services dans les négociations de paix, puis, en 1872, la noblesse héréditaire pour ses services financiers à la Roumanie. Consul général de Grande-Bretagne à Berlin pendant près d'un quart de siècle, il laissa une fortune de plusieurs dizaines de millions de marks.
