Raphaël Jonathan Bischoffsheim est un financier et philanthrope belge né à Mayence en 1808 et mort à Bruxelles le 6 février 1883. Parti jeune pour la Belgique, il y ouvre des banques à Anvers et à Bruxelles, participe à la fondation de l'Union du Crédit en 1848, et sauve la Banque nationale d'une faillite imminente en 1841, ce qui lui vaut la croix de l'ordre de Léopold; membre du conseil communal de Bruxelles et sénateur pendant vingt ans, il fonde de nombreuses institutions philanthropiques, et reçoit en 1859 sa naturalisation en reconnaissance de services exceptionnels.
