Bilshan est l'un des notables revenus de Babylone à Jérusalem avec Zorobabel, cité tour à tour comme « Beelsarus » et rapproché de « Belshunu » (Son Seigneur). Selon la tradition rabbinique, il ne s'agit pas d'un nom propre mais d'un surnom donné à Mardochée en raison de son talent pour les langues — il en parlait, dit-on, soixante-dix, autant que de nations connues, et comprenait même le langage des muets.
