Born in Cologne into a Jewish family, Ph.D. from Leipzig (1897), he joined the American Museum of Natural History (1898) on the suggestion of Franz Boas, then the Field Museum in Chicago. He led several expeditions to China and formed one of the first great collections of Chinese material culture in the United States. He published over 200 works (ethnology, languages, archaeology), including his monograph on jade.
