Joseph Vassilievitch Bertensohn est un médecin de cour russe né à Nikolaïev, dans le gouvernement de Kherson, en 1835, diplômé du gymnase d'Odessa en 1849 puis de l'université de Dorpat en 1857, où il obtient son doctorat en médecine. Médecin de l'hôpital municipal de Vitebsk en 1859, il étudie à l'étranger auprès de Virchow, Traube, Skoda et Helmholtz en 1861, rejoint en 1862 le ministère de l'Intérieur puis le conseil de santé de Saint-Pétersbourg, et voit l'asile pour choléra qu'il dirige transformé en 1867 en premier hôpital municipal; il fonde en 1875 un dispensaire gratuit et accompagne le chirurgien Pirogov sur le front pendant la guerre franco-prussienne.
