Michel Berr, premier Juif à exercer comme avocat en France, est né à Nancy en 1780 et mort dans la même ville le 4 juillet 1843, fils d'Isaac Berr de Turique. Formé par d'éminents maîtres, il débute vers vingt ans comme auteur à Strasbourg, où il étudie le droit, avec un pamphlet contre les lois anti-juives d'Europe, puis rejoint Paris vers 1803, où il est élu député à l'Assemblée des notables juifs et devient secrétaire du Grand Sanhédrin; chef de division au ministère de l'Intérieur de Westphalie, il dirige en 1809 le bureau de la préfecture de Meurthe, avant d'abandonner le barreau pour la littérature en 1813.
