Nathan Ossipovitch Bernstein est un physiologiste russe né à Brody, en Galicie, en 1836, et mort à Odessa le 9 février 1891, petit-fils du grand-rabbin de Posen Salomon Eger. Installé à Odessa avec ses parents en 1849, diplômé du gymnase en 1853, il étudie la médecine à l'université de Moscou (1853-58), où il reçoit une médaille d'or en 1857. Médecin-conseil de l'hôpital municipal d'Odessa à partir de 1861 et corédacteur du périodique « Sion » jusqu'à sa suppression en 1862, il devient en 1865 instructeur d'anatomie et de physiologie à la nouvelle université de Novorossia à Odessa.
