Bernstein, Karl Ilyich

Karl Ilyich Bernstein est un juriste russe, professeur de droit romain, né à Odessa le 13 janvier 1842 et mort à Berlin en 1894. Formé à Dresde, Halle, Heidelberg et Berlin, il obtient en 1864 le doctorat en droit de l'université de Berlin, mais, empêché par sa religion d'enseigner en Russie, se consacre au droit russe à Odessa puis à Saint-Pétersbourg; installé à Berlin après son mariage en 1872, il y enseigne le droit romain comme privat-docent pendant huit ans (1878-86), puis comme professeur titulaire en 1887, année où il renonce à sa nationalité russe. Il participe, à partir de 1881, au comité berlinois d'aide aux exilés juifs de Russie.
