Julius Bernstein est un physiologiste et auteur médical allemand né à Berlin le 8 décembre 1839, fils d'Aaron Bernstein (1822-84). Diplômé docteur en médecine de l'université de Berlin en 1862, il devient privat-docent à la faculté de médecine de Heidelberg en 1865, professeur assistant de physiologie en 1869, puis, deux ans plus tard, professeur de physiologie à l'université de Halle, poste qu'il occupe toujours en 1902; l'un des physiologistes les plus en vue de son temps, il dirige depuis 1888 les « Untersuchungen aus dem Physiologischen Institut in Halle ».
