Hirsch Bernstein est un éditeur et publiciste russo-américain né à Vladislavov, dans le gouvernement de Souvalki, le 25 mars 1846. Émigré aux États-Unis en 1870 et installé à New York, il y fonde la même année « The Post », premier périodique yiddish d'Amérique, ainsi que « Ha-Ṣofeh be'Ereṣ ha-Ḥadashah », premier journal néo-hébraïque du pays, publié chaque semaine pendant cinq ans; collaborateur régulier de « Ha-Maggid », « Ha-Lebanon » et « Ha-Karmel », il fut, après Ch. G. Vidaver, l'un des premiers correspondants américains réguliers des périodiques hébraïques européens.
