Hippolyte Bernheim est un médecin et neurologue français né à Mulhouse, en Alsace, diplômé docteur en médecine de l'université de Strasbourg en 1867, où il devient la même année chargé de cours et médecin en ville. Lorsque Strasbourg passe à l'Allemagne après la guerre franco-prussienne, en 1871, il s'installe à Nancy comme professeur clinicien, et devient, à partir de 1880 environ, l'un des chefs de file de l'étude de l'hypnotisme, auquel il consacre plusieurs ouvrages, dont « De la Suggestion et de son Application à la Thérapeutique » (Paris, 1887).
