Ernst Bernheim est un historien allemand né à Hambourg le 19 février 1850, formé aux universités de Berlin, Heidelberg, Strasbourg et Göttingen. Docteur de Strasbourg en 1874 avec une thèse sur le concordat de Worms, il devient privat-docent à Göttingen en 1875, puis professeur assistant d'histoire à Greifswald en 1883; converti au christianisme lors de son mariage en 1885, il publie son « Lehrbuch der Historischen Methode » (Leipzig, 1889), la même année où il est promu professeur ordinaire, et participe dès 1882 à l'édition monumentale des « Deutsche Reichstagsacten unter Ruprecht ».
