Martin Bernhardt est un neurologue et auteur médical allemand né à Potsdam le 10 avril 1844, formé à l'université de Berlin sous Virchow et Traube. Diplômé docteur en médecine en 1867, il devient assistant de Leyden à Königsberg puis médecin à la Charité de Berlin sous Westphal, avant que la guerre franco-allemande n'interrompe son activité clinique — il reçoit une médaille pour bravoure au front —; de retour en 1872, il devient privat-docent puis, dix ans plus tard, professeur associé de neuropathologie à l'université de Berlin, et dirige depuis 1885 le « Centralblatt für die Medizinischen Wissenschaften ».
