Maximilian Bern est un écrivain allemand né à Kherson, dans le sud de la Russie, le 18 novembre 1849, où son père exerçait la médecine. Après la mort de celui-ci et la ruine de sa fortune, qui l'oblige à abandonner ses études universitaires à Vienne, il devient en 1873 précepteur dans une école d'équitation avant de se tourner vers la littérature; le succès de son premier roman, « Auf Schwankem Grunde », lui permet de voyager en Allemagne, puis il s'installe à Paris en 1886, épouse l'année suivante l'actrice autrichienne Olga Wohlbrück, et se fixe à Berlin en 1888.
