Jacob Bernays est un philologue allemand né à Hambourg le 18 septembre 1824 et mort à Bonn le 26 mai 1881, fils aîné du hakham Isaac Bernays. Envoyé étudier à Bonn en 1844, il obtient en 1848 son diplôme après avoir remporté un prix pour un traité sur Lucrèce, publié en 1852, puis devient privat-docent l'année suivante. Associé dès 1853 à la fondation du séminaire théologique juif de Breslau, il y enseigne à partir de son ouverture, le 10 août 1854, le grec, le latin et l'histoire de la poésie hébraïque, contribuant plusieurs études savantes, dont « Die Chronik des Sulpicius Severus » (Berlin, 1861).
