Born in Offenbach am Main on August 13, 1863, son of Rabbi Samuel Dessau and younger brother of historian-epigrapher Hermann Dessau. Graduate of Strasbourg (1886) under August Kundt. Assistant at the University of Padua (1889) then Bologna (1891), where he collaborated with Augusto Righi on electromagnetic waves and wireless telegraphy; professor of experimental physics at the University of Perugia from 1904 to 1935. Naturalized Italian, he was one of the principal animators of Italian Zionism and co-founder of the journal "L'Idea sionista." Husband of the artist Emma Goitein (Emma Dessau Goitein) and father of geologist Gabor Dessau.
