Hermann Bernard est professeur d'hébreu à l'université de Cambridge, en Angleterre, né de parents autrichiens à Ouman, dans le sud de la Russie, en 1785; son père, juif converti, l'éleva dans le christianisme. Arrivé en Angleterre en 1825, il s'installe à Cambridge en 1830 et y est nommé, le 18 octobre 1837, « Præceptor Linguæ Sacræ », succédant à Josephus Crool; il y meurt le 15 novembre 1857, à soixante-douze ans, après vingt-sept années d'enseignement. Il publia notamment « The Creed and Ethics of the Jews » (1832) et « Ha-Menahel » (1839), ainsi qu'une grammaire hébraïque en deux volumes malgré sa cécité, « Me Menuḥot » (1853).
