Naphtali Ẓebi Judah Berlin est le chef de la yeshiva de Volojine, en Russie, né à Mir, dans le gouvernement de Minsk, en 1817, et mort à Varsovie le 10 août 1893. Marié en 1831 à la fille d'Isaac b. Ḥayyim, chef de la yeshiva, il en devient le directeur unique après la mort de son beau-frère Eliezer Isaac en 1854, poursuivant un enseignement fondé sur le raisonnement logique plutôt que le pilpoul, selon les principes d'Élie de Wilna; le nombre d'élèves passe alors de cent à plus de quatre cents. Confronté aux Maskilim, qui obtinrent en 1879 la fermeture de la yeshiva par le gouvernement, il la fit rouvrir en 1881 à force d'efforts.
