Leo Berlin est un avocat russe, fils de Moses Berlin, né à Vitebsk le 22 novembre 1854. Formé à Saint-Pétersbourg puis en droit à l'université de Berne (diplômé en 1878), il obtient en 1881 le doctorat en droit pénal de l'université de Moscou. Fiancé à la doctoresse Amalie Hering, fille du physiologiste Ewald Hering, à qui les autorités russes refusèrent d'abord, en raison de sa foi catholique, la permission d'épouser un Juif — elle dut se convertir au protestantisme, et il fallut l'intervention du poète Tourgueniev —, il dirige à Saint-Pétersbourg le cabinet Berlin Brothers tout en résidant à Bruxelles.
