Josef Berkowicz est un officier de l'armée polonaise, fils du colonel Berek (Berko), qui prit part à la bataille de Kock en 1809, où son père fut tué. Quittant le service militaire en 1815, il devient garde forestier des forêts domaniales de Troki puis, en 1826, garde forestier en chef du district de Bielsk, avant de servir pendant l'insurrection polonaise de 1830 sous les ordres du général Rozycki; établi ensuite en Angleterre, il y écrit le roman « Stanislaus, or the Polish Lancer in the Suite of Napoleon from the Island of Elba », publié par sa famille en 1846, après sa mort.
