Philippe Bergèr, professeur chrétien d'hébreu et membre de l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, est né à Beaucourt, dans le Haut-Rhin, en septembre 1846, frère de Samuel Bergèr. Diplômé de l'université de Strasbourg, il s'installe à Paris comme professeur d'hébreu à la Faculté de théologie protestante et sous-bibliothécaire de l'Institut de France, puis succède à son maître et ami Renan à la chaire d'hébreu du Collège de France, se consacrant à l'épigraphie sémitique et collaborant au « Corpus Inscriptionum Semiticarum »; parmi ses écrits figurent « L'Écriture des Inscriptions Sémitiques » (1880) et « Essai sur la Signification Historique des Noms des Patriarches Hébreux » (1887).
