Gottlieb Michael Berendt est un géologue allemand né à Berlin le 4 janvier 1836. Formé aux sciences minières, il publie en 1863 la première carte géologique de la Marche de Brandebourg, s'installe à Königsberg où il devient professeur extraordinaire en 1872, puis professeur à l'université de Berlin en 1875, se distinguant par ses travaux sur la géologie de la plaine nord-allemande et comptant parmi les premiers à reconnaître la théorie glaciaire; il publie aussi, en 1870, un ouvrage réfutant le darwinisme.
