Born in Turin, philologist trained at the University of Turin, specialist in Romance and general linguistics, editor of the Archivio Glottologico Italiano. Forced into exile by fascist racial laws (1938), he taught at the University of Tucumán (Argentina) before returning as professor in Turin (1947–1961). He was a member of the council of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities and left pioneering studies on Judeo-Italian.
