Don Judah Benoliel est consul du Maroc et d'Autriche à Gibraltar, président de la communauté juive de la ville et de sa chambre de commerce; il meurt en 1839. Il se distingua par ses services à la communauté juive de Tanger : après la démolition de ses synagogues, ordonnée par le gouverneur à la suite d'une querelle, il obtint du sultan Moulay Abd al-Rahman, qui l'estimait beaucoup, l'autorisation de les rebâtir — geste commémoré depuis par une prière spéciale le jour de Kippour à Tanger. Il jouissait aussi de la confiance du cardinal Mastai-Ferretti, futur pape Pie IX, qui lui confia d'importantes sommes à son retour du Chili en Italie.
