Nathan Lazarus Benmohel, premier juif pratiquant à obtenir un diplôme dans une université britannique, est né à Hambourg vers 1800 et mort en 1869. Installé à Dublin en 1829 comme professeur de langues, il entre à l'université en 1832, y obtient son B.A. en 1836 et son M.A. en 1846, et occupe de 1839 à 1842 le poste de professeur adjoint d'allemand et de français à Dublin University.
