Sir Benjamin Benjamin est un homme d'affaires et notable communautaire né à Londres en 1836, arrivé en Australie à l'âge de neuf ans. Conseiller municipal de Melbourne à partir de 1870 puis échevin en 1881, très engagé dans la vie de la congrégation hébraïque de Melbourne et ses œuvres philanthropiques, il est élu maire de Melbourne en octobre 1887, réélu à l'unanimité, puis fait chevalier en mai 1889 en reconnaissance de ses services municipaux.
