Samuel Benjamin est un soldat français engagé en 1837 dans l'expédition carliste contre Madrid, connu pour sa bravoure et son dévouement envers son lieutenant, Boulan de Brie. Mortellement blessé, celui-ci fut porté par Benjamin hors du champ de bataille puis hors de l'hôpital où il avait été abandonné après le départ précipité des carlistes de Huesca, et mourut dans ses bras; Benjamin, juif scrupuleusement pratiquant, observait les lois de sa religion autant que le permettait la vie de campagne.
