Né Benjamin Wechsler le 14 novembre 1898 à Iași, connu en Roumanie comme poète symboliste sous le nom Fundoianu, il s'installe à Paris en 1923 et écrit en français sous le pseudonyme Fondane. Proche de la pensée de Léon Chestov, il développe une philosophie existentielle. Naturalisé français en 1938, dénoncé comme juif, il est arrêté par la Gestapo et assassiné dans une chambre à gaz à Auschwitz-Birkenau le 2/3 octobre 1944.
