Born Benjamin Wechsler on November 14, 1898 in Iași, known in Romania as a symbolist poet under the name Fundoianu, he settled in Paris in 1923 and wrote in French under the pseudonym Fondane. Close to the thought of Léon Chestov, he developed an existential philosophy. Naturalized French in 1938, denounced as a Jew, he was arrested by the Gestapo and murdered in a gas chamber at Auschwitz-Birkenau on October 2/3, 1944.
