Born in 1930 in a Jewish family from Kiev. Physicist of worldwide reputation in laser physics, professor emeritus at Tel-Aviv University. Militant Refusnik from 1974 onwards (emigrated to Israel in 1977). Author of a study on the Jewish identity of Soviet Jews (with M. Verbit, 1984) and essays on science and Judaism: Creation Ex Nihilo, Law and Providence, Dalut ha-Kfira (« The Poverty of Secularism »).
