Rabbi born in Asti, he held rabbinical positions in Italy before becoming haham of the Sephardic community in London in 1866, where he was very active in education. He published a collection of sermons (1873) and wrote odes and prayers in Hebrew as well as poems in Italian.

Grand-rabbin de la congrégation espagnole et portugaise de Londres ; né à Asti, Italie, en 1835 ; décédé à Brighton, près de Londres, le 6 janvier 1879. Il perdit son père étant enfant, et son oncle maternel supervisa son éducation précoce. Il devait son éducation théologique aux rabbins Marco Tedeschi, de Trieste, et Terracini. À vingt ans il enseignait l'hébreu, l'italien, le français, l'anglais et l'allemand. Sa première nomination fut celle de ministre auprès de la congrégation de Saluzzo près de Gênes. Alors qu'il était rabbin d'une congrégation à Naples, il reçut un appel de Londres, où il fut installé comme grand-rabbin des congrégations espagnoles et portugaises du Royaume-Uni (16 décembre 1866). Après une année de séjour en Angleterre, il acquit une telle maîtrise de l'anglais qu'il pouvait prêcher dans cette langue avec éloquence. Profondément intéressé par les institutions anglo-juives, il tourna son attention principalement vers l'organisation et la supervision des établissements d'enseignement de sa propre congrégation, les écoles Sha'are Tikvah et Villareal. Bien que partisan de vues orthodoxes, il accueillit favorablement les réformes modérées, et s'efforça de promouvoir toute entreprise tendant à l'union des factions discordantes. Il fut auteur de diverses odes et prières en hébreu, et de plusieurs pièces de poésie italienne. Une sélection de ses sermons prononcés en Angleterre fut publiée en 1873.
