Theodor Benfey est un sanskritiste et philologue comparatiste allemand né à Nörten, dans le Hanovre, le 28 janvier 1809, converti au christianisme en 1848 et mort le 26 juin 1881, fils d'un marchand juif versé dans le Talmud. Formé à la philologie classique à Göttingen, où il obtient son doctorat en 1828, il se tourne ensuite vers le sanskrit, enseigne à Heidelberg à partir de 1832 puis, dès 1834, revient à Göttingen, où il se consacre au sanskrit et à la linguistique comparée; son « Griechisches Wurzellexikon » (1839-42) reçoit le prix Volney.
