Moriz Benedikt est un neurologue autrichien né à Eisenstadt, en Hongrie, le 6 juillet 1835. Formé à l'université de Vienne auprès de Hyrtl, Brücke, Skoda, Oppolzer, Arlt et Rokitansky, il y obtient en 1859 son doctorat en médecine et chirurgie et s'engage aussitôt comme volontaire dans l'armée autrichienne; devenu privat-docent, il se porte de nouveau volontaire lors de la guerre de 1866, puis reçoit en 1868 la chaire de neurologie de l'université de Vienne. Pionnier de la criminologie moderne fondée sur l'anthropologie et la psychologie, il publie notamment « Electrotherapie » (Vienne, 1868).
