Journaliste allemand, éditeur et directeur de la « Neue Freie Presse » de Vienne ; né à Gnatschitz, Moravie, le 27 mai 1849. À sa majorité, il choisit le journalisme comme profession, contribuant avec un succès considérable à divers quotidiens et périodiques en Allemagne. En 1872, il entra à la rédaction de la « Neue Freie Presse », devenant éditeur de la section économique en 1879. Les deux années suivantes, il se consacra à la publication d'une série d'articles sur des sujets économiques, commerciaux et financiers, articles qui attirèrent considérablement l'attention. En 1880, il devint rédacteur en chef.
