Alfred Philipp Bender est un rabbin né à Dublin, en Irlande, en 1863, formé par son père le révérend Philipp Bender, rabbin de la congrégation de Dublin, puis à St John's College, à Cambridge. Nommé en 1891 rabbin de la congrégation hébraïque du Cap, en Afrique du Sud, où il réside encore en 1901, il est aussi professeur d'hébreu au South African College et publie dans la « Jewish Quarterly Review » des travaux sur les coutumes funéraires juives.
