Eduard Julius Friedrich Bendemann est un peintre allemand né à Berlin le 3 décembre 1811 et mort à Düsseldorf le 27 décembre 1889, fils d'un banquier berlinois en contact avec les milieux intellectuels de la capitale. Formé auprès de W. Schadow à Berlin puis à Düsseldorf, où il devient membre de l'« école de Düsseldorf », il se fait remarquer dès 1828 par un portrait de sa grand-mère, puis connaît la consécration en 1832 avec « Les Juifs pleurant en exil à Babylone », avant de recevoir du prince héritier de Prusse la commande de « Jérémie à la chute de Jérusalem ».
