Baron L. Benas est un notable communautaire anglais né à Liverpool en 1844, figure de premier plan de l'Old Hebrew Congregation de Liverpool, dont il est l'un des administrateurs. Lors de l'émigration russe de 1882, il contribue à fonder la section locale du Russo-Jewish Committee, chargée d'organiser le transit des émigrants russes vers les États-Unis via l'Angleterre; président de la Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, il y présente notamment, en 1900, une étude sur l'histoire de la communauté juive de Liverpool.
