Franz Ferdinand Benary est un orientaliste allemand né à Cassel le 22 mars 1805 et mort à Berlin le 7 février 1880. Après des études de théologie et de philologie à Bonn puis à Halle, où Gesenius l'oriente vers les langues orientales, il devient privat-docent de langues orientales à l'université de Berlin de 1829 à 1831 — période où il publie le poème indien ancien « Nalodaya » en 1830 —, puis professeur assistant de théologie, et publie en 1835 son traité « De Hebræorum Leviratu ».
