Elijah Benamozegh est un rabbin italien né à Livourne en 1822 et mort dans la même ville en 1900, fils d'un couple originaire de Fès, au Maroc, orphelin dès l'âge de quatre ans. Après une brève carrière commerciale, il se consacre à la philosophie et à la théologie, devient rabbin et professeur de théologie au séminaire rabbinique de sa ville natale, et défend la tradition juive, notamment la Kabbale, dans de nombreux ouvrages apologétiques et scientifiques.
