Premier grammairien et lexicographe juif des Temps modernes, né près de Cracovie en 1764, mort à Vienne le 12 mars 1811. Marié très jeune, il s'installe à Cracovie chez ses beaux-parents, partageant ses journées entre l'étude du Talmud et, la nuit, l'apprentissage clandestin de la philologie hébraïque, avant de rejoindre Berlin, foyer de la Haskala. Il vécut ensuite une dizaine d'années à Breslau, où il rédigea sa grammaire hébraïque, « Talmud Leshon Ivri » (1796), avant de revenir à Cracovie puis de s'établir à Vienne comme correcteur dans l'imprimerie hébraïque d'Anton Schmid, poste qu'il occupa jusqu'à sa mort.
