Financier américain né à Alzey, en Allemagne, en 1816, mort à New York le 24 novembre 1890. Formé à Francfort-sur-le-Main puis employé plusieurs années dans les bureaux bancaires Rothschild, il s'installe à New York en 1837 comme représentant américain de ses anciens employeurs. Consul général d'Autriche à New York de 1844 à 1850, il démissionne par désapprobation du traitement infligé à la Hongrie, puis est nommé en 1853 chargé d'affaires des États-Unis à La Haye, où il est ministre résident de 1855 à 1858. En 1860, il devient président du comité national démocrate jusqu'en 1872, et fut délégué de New York aux conventions démocrates nationales jusqu'en 1884.
