Hébraïsant chrétien et professeur de théologie à l'université de Berlin, né à Erfurt le 23 septembre 1754, mort à Berlin le 25 octobre 1842. Diplômé de Göttingen, il enseigne quatre ans à Reval, en Russie, avant de revenir à Erfurt en 1782 comme Magister legens, puis professeur adjoint de théologie et de philosophie à l'université de la ville. En 1804, il est nommé directeur du Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster à Berlin et professeur de théologie à l'université de cette ville. Pionnier de l'épigraphie hébraïque, il publia notamment, en 1795, un ouvrage sur les douze pierres du Jourdain, en 1813 un essai sur la métrique des Hébreux, et en 1824 une étude sur l'Urim et le Thoummim.
