Dramaturge américain né à San Francisco en 1858, de parents anglais. Formé au Lincoln College de San Francisco après une enfance passée à Vancouver sous la tutelle d'un prêtre catholique, il présente sa première pièce, « Jim Black », à San Francisco en 1872, puis devient en 1878 régisseur du Baldwin Theater de cette ville. Installé à New York en 1880, il connaît son premier grand succès d'auteur en 1884 avec « May Blossom », puis rejoint en 1885 le Lyceum Theater aux côtés de Daniel Frohman, où il écrit, en collaboration avec Henry C. de Mille, plusieurs pièces à succès.
