Enseignant et rédacteur russe né à Friedrichstadt, en Courlande, le 26 septembre 1830, mort à Saint-Pétersbourg le 27 avril 1893. Établi à Mitau en 1854, il y ouvre en 1861 une école privée pour garçons juifs, puis fonde en 1864, à l'invitation de la communauté juive de Saint-Pétersbourg, la première école juive de la ville, qu'il dirige jusqu'à sa mort. De 1869 à 1882, il enseigne également la religion juive au collège Kolomenskaya pour jeunes filles, et fonde en 1879 l'hebdomadaire russo-hébraïque « Russki Yevrei », qu'il dirige jusqu'en 1884.
