Médecin et acteur communautaire né à Liverpool en 1828, mort à Londres le 28 novembre 1893. Formé à l'University College Hospital de Londres puis à Manchester, il devient licencié du Royal College of Physicians d'Édimbourg en 1859, exerce d'abord à Liverpool comme médecin honoraire du dispensaire local, puis à Londres, où il publie de nombreux articles médicaux, dont une série sur l'épidémie de choléra parue dans le « Lancet » en 1852. Il rendit son plus grand service à la communauté juive de Londres au Jews' Hospital and Orphan Asylum de Norwood, qu'il présida à partir de 1871.
