Médecin et historien français né à Metz le 24 avril 1802 (ou, selon certaines sources, le 23 avril 1803), mort à Paris le 31 mai 1888. Après avoir servi comme médecin militaire pendant la guerre d'Espagne, il obtient son doctorat à son retour en France en 1828 et fonde en 1830 à Metz un journal hebdomadaire, « L'Indicateur de l'Est », interrompu en 1832. Installé à Paris en 1850, il se consacre à des travaux littéraires et archéologiques, participe à l'édition de la correspondance de Napoléon Ier, et devient bibliothécaire du Louvre en 1869, puis de la Bibliothèque nationale en 1874.
