Mathématicien allemand né à Trèves le 31 juillet 1825, mort à Bonn le 18 novembre 1863. Formé à l'école technique et au gymnase de sa ville natale, il se rend en 1845 à Bonn pour étudier les mathématiques et les sciences sous Plücker, dont il devient l'assistant. En 1848, il remporte un prix pour son essai sur les axes optiques des cristaux biaxes et obtient son doctorat. Il publie en 1854 « Einleitung in die Höhere Optik », qui lui vaut une large réputation, et devient en 1855 professeur de mathématiques à Bonn.
